I'm thinking that Betty Draper is the dark version of Laura Petrie. In fact, perhaps all of Mad Men is really just the dark version of "The Dick Van Dyke Show". There are similarities they both share of course -- the hair style, the svelte figures, the capri pants.
I'm sure I'm revealing my inner geek when I recall the episode of the original Star Trek series in which several crewmembers were sent to a parallel universe where their characters existed but in "evil" forms. A bearded Spock awaits them. Advancement is through assassination. Kirk is powerful because he has alien technology to head off his enemies before they get him.
Laura vs. Betty is similar -- the same, a ying-yang with perky vs. moody.
The thing is, I like them both. I can't tell which I like better. Being of a certain age, Laura Petrie was iconic for "the woman you wanted to marry". But now, I think I would find Betty more intriguing.
Anyway, try watching one against the other sometime and see if you don't think they're both parts of the same character.
