"Tribal" as used in describing a style of tattoo makes no sense to me. Which tribe is it exactly - Survivor season 2? I have seen some African traditional tattoos that are made up of dots in various patterns. The manner in which they are done is with what looks a lot like a set of drum sticks. Something done either by that method or in that style could legitimately described as "tribal". A tattoo of a Celtic symbol might also be called "tribal". But just making a design that someone thinks is neat but has no other meaning does not constitute being "tribal". If "tribal" is a good adjective for something like that why not "cultural" or "urban" or "rural" tattoos? I guess the PC term for a redneck tattoo (some sort of confederate flag or something) will end up being called "rural". It makes about as much sense as tribal. Don't get me wrong, I like "tribal" designs, but there has got to be a better term for them. How about "those squiggly, pointy sorta things"? It is a heck of a lot more accurate than "tribal".
That word in that context bugs me. What misnomers bother you? (Feel free to rant away - it can be very cathartic. LOL )
