The Best We Can Do. A Poem

I have a friend.
He is good to me.
He has done me favors
And I have done
The same for him.

It's a friendship
That is bittersweet.
My friend suffers
From illnesses
One diagnosed
As terminal cancer.

I have only known
Him since January.
He has had days
That were good
And some bad.
Many hospitalizations.
And thankfully
Some improvement.

I think had we met
Maybe five or even ten
Years before
Our connection
Could have been romantic.
But such a thought
Has little relevance.
Could have beens
Are a harsh contemplation.

I want to be there.
I want to support him.
As best as I can.
I want to treat him
As I would like to be treated
Were I in a similar situation.

He has two exwives
But no .
He has many brothers
With nephews and nieces.

He is missing
What I want for myself.
Someone who loves me
And vice versa.
We are both
Lonely and alone.
Dancing around
This issue.
Making light
Making jokes.
Making the days
Less dark
And ominous.
However long we have.
I think it is
The best we can do.
